Arthur Miller wishes a Happy Birthday to Marshall Field in “Art Class”

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/arthur-miller-wishes-a-happy-birthday-to-marshall/id+1.419.926.8437?i=+1.419.926.8437

August 18 is Marshall Field’s Birthday so Arthur Miller’s Art Class will be about Marshall Fields relationship with Lake Forest

Show Notes:

LF has been the home of Marshall Field 5th for many years and now a daughter has a weekend house here as well, a rehabilitated 1911 Shaw mansion.

Marshall Field, I died after a Jan. 1, 1905 or 1906 golf game on the Chicago area, catching a bad cold a third of a century before antibiotics. P.D. Armour had died the same way playing outside with his grandkids five or so years earlier. After Field died, John G. Shedd took over as the second president of the firm, continuing to grow it, including working personally with Edward H. Bennett ca. 1907 on the Walnut Room, with Bennett’s design. Shedd died in the late 1920s, having given LF lakefront homes to two daughters, Mrs. Schweppe on Mayflower and Mrs. Reed, later Keith. Mrs. Reed rebuilt the garden and house, the latter with David Adler. Mrs. Reed also built an indoor tennis court and adjacent living quarters, where they lived while the 1931 Adler house was built. The two sisters donated the 1931 LF Library, in the same cruciform plan as their father’s late 1920s Aquarium, Chicago. When wings were added in 1978, Mrs. Reed’s son, John Sheed Reed, was the donor; he was chair of the Santa Fe RR, then headquartered in Chicago.

Field I had been planning to build a museum downtown for 1893 fair anthropology artifacts, etc. his nephew, Stanley Field, in the cold golf party, inherited the job of creating the museum. After court losses over putting the museum in Grant Park, they created new landfill south of the grant Park landfill, from coal ashes from the Loop, hand shoveled, and built the building, which opened in 1921. Field also built a Lake Bluff lakefront home at the end of today’s Lakeland Rd.

One of the first branch stores of Fields was in the west building facing the park in Market Square, 1931, eventually expanding to take over the whole building. The upstairs by the 1970s was women’s dresses and sports wear. The basement sold linens, etc., and the main floor accessories, cosmetics, and a few men’s clothes. The malls, with a bigger Fields at Hawthorne, cut into that trade in Market Square. By 2006 the Fields successor company, Macy’s, closed most of the store, though kept the cosmetics business as Blu Mercury.

New Podcast: The “Email Show”

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-email-show/id+1.419.926.8437?i=+1.419.926.8437

Skoo Walker, Arthur Miller, and Pete Jansons discuss the email Pete sent out 8-10-21 which asked for feedback on the Lake Forest Caucus Committee

Problem: It’s becoming harder to find volunteers for the Lake Forest Caucus Committee. (Voting residents of Lake Forest) Invitations to participate are being turned down. No Volunteers means no Caucus committee.

Objections.

– It’s Political with a liberal bent, its groupthink, “Boys Club”, Clique, and “Insiders Only”

– They don’t know what it is, and Current Caucus Committee members cannot overcome objections while explaining what the Caucus is.

Objection #1:

It’s Political with a liberal bent, it’s groupthink, “Boys Club”, Clique, and “Insiders Only”

Possible Reasons:

The LFCC Executive Committee (LFCCEC) is formed by the LFCC President selecting who they want for Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising Chair, External Communications, Internal Communications, and the 4 ward chairmen. The Vice President from the prior year automatically becomes the President. It could be perceived that the president can surround themselves with people they know and like.

LFCC members are presented with a list of LFCCEC members to vote on in March with no information

LFCC is a 3-year term for first-year LFCC members who don’t want to “make waves” and vote with who the LFCCEC puts on the card.

LFCC is a PAC and the LFCC including the LFCCEC cannot explain what it is

The current LFCCEC President and Vice President are not held to the same attendance standard as the LFCC. School Board Candidates were determined by a Task Force selected by the President versus letting the entire LFCC presenting candidates.

Cannot afford to make donations (2020 Caucus Committee was asked to donate and would be recognized in front of the Caucus Committee)

Solution:

The LFCC Executive Committee should be vetted by the LFCC. The LFCC should have a nomination process for all positions in LFCCEC.

Determine interest within LFCC for each position to be nominated

Nominees are vetted by LFCC

LFCC Nominates candidates to be on the election in March

Positions that handle money should be additionally vetted (Treasurer and Fundraising Chair)

Objection #2: The LFC (residents and small businesses) don’t know what the LFC or LFCC is and LFCC members cannot overcome objections while explaining what the Caucus is.

Possible Reasons:

Resources are put on dealing with situations after the fact versus preventing them (education public on LFCC process versus spending on lawn signs)

There is no onboarding process for members

Bylaws have not been updated for 3 months.

Cannot explain why it’s a PACT

The Lake Forest Caucus (The voting residents of Lake Forest) do not understand the selection process for example, one candidate on the “Let’s Do Better” Slate wanted to pitch in and be on the School Board and didn’t know about the Process

Solution:

– More Scrutiny and oversight to External and Internal Communications

– Funds/Marketing for prevention vs Contest Elections.

John Barth of Lake Forest has been named the 2021-22 President of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club.

The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club was established in 1959 and is one of 35,000+ clubs world-wide affiliated with Rotary International, a global network of 1.2 million members who are actively changing lives locally and internationally with the mission of providing service to others, promoting integrity, and advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Rotary International and its affiliates have been on the forefront of leading efforts such as the eradication of Polio worldwide.

Barth has lived and operated his business in Lake Forest for over 20 years. He has held numerous leadership positions within the Club throughout the years since he first joined the Club in 2006.

“Our local club provides members the opportunity to network all over the world and to do good within our own community as well as within neighboring communities,” Barth said. “We support organizations like Northern Illinois Food Back, CROYA, LEAD, Nuestro Center, Mothers Trust Foundation, Gorton Community Center, Lake County Habitat for Humanity, and special projects at Lake Forest Hospital and The Cradle.” The Club’s annual coat drive has provided thousands of warm winter coats for youth in Waukegan and North Chicago. Club members actively volunteer at organizations including school reading programs and the Boys & Girls Club of Lake County.

Barth is quick to add that the local club has been a force on the international scene, as well. “Some of our members have traveled as volunteers to the Maranatha School in Uganda and delivered Polio vaccinations in India,” he said. The Club sent Earthquake relief to Haiti, supported Japan Disaster relief efforts and assisted in providing wells for safe drinking water in Kenya and Tanzania.

Club members who travel are welcome to attend local weekly meetings throughout the world and are embraced by their hosts. “This is a great benefit to being a Rotarian,” said Barth. “You are welcome wherever your travels take you.”

The Club sponsors several fundraisers throughout the year, including the very popular Economic Breakfast which brings experts in the industry together to provide economic insights on the year ahead.

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club meets weekly on Wednesday mornings at 7:15 am at the Lake Forest Club. For more information, contact us at https://www.lflbrotary.org.

How can the Lake Forest Caucus Committee improve?

We’d like the CItizens of Lake Forest to give their thoughts on the Caucus and why more people aren’t volunteering….

Lake Forest Illinois Caucus Committee Autopsy without blame (Blame the Process, not the people) Suggestions for Improvement.

Background:

Pete Jansons moved to Lake Forest in 2018 and is currently serving on the Lake Forest Caucus Committee (LFCC) since March 2019. Pete learned about the LFCC from Tim Newman, who was a past LFCC President. As Pete was going through the LFCC process his neighbors who have lived in LF all their lives advised him not to join because it’s a waste of his time because there are only a few people who control what goes on and that these people care more about having their service on their resumes then actually doing the work. After hearing this, Pete’s goal was to see if this was true and if so try and help correct it.

The main duty of an LFCC member is to interview people, vet and recommend candidates to the Lake Forest Caucus (LFC) to vote on to fill open positions on boards, City Council, Alderman and Mayor. It is an HR position.2021 had a lot of school board members terming off and there was going to be a slate of Candidates to Challenge the LFCC recommended Candidates.

Pete created a podcast (Lake Forest Podcast) to interview the LFCC candidates, so the LFC had an additional way to learn about the Candidates the LFCC was recommending as well as learn about what the LFCC is and does. Since Pete was new to the area he knew he needed help with LF’s Background and its History. Pete was introduced to Skoo Walker (the voice of the Lake Forest High School (LFHS) Football/Basketball Scouts, resident of LF for 57 years and a past member of the LFCC as well as a Ward Chair) and Arthur Miller (LF History Author) and they joined the Lake Forest Podcast.
